about

Italian pianist Franco Piccinno on the endless “Migrations” roads
A trio with a mainstream sound and a strong interplay

Citizen of the world and comfortable with dialogue and exchange of ideas, Italian pianist Franco Piccinno debuts on Auand Piano Series with his new album “Migrations”, leading a trio that features Aldo Vigorito on double bass and Giuseppe La Pusata on drums.

The delirious dances of ‘Late Night Joke’ and the solar lightness of ‘Lido’, both penned by Piccinno as most of the album tracks, are two postcards sent from different corner of the globe, and caressed by nuances of timber. Above the compositions, a strong sense of swing the three musicians have developed within this project as well as through different experiences.

As a way of detaching it from the context, the title tracks is a solo flight: a gloomy reflection on distance and the hundreds of dwellings of all the time spent in research. Something the pianist himself has experienced over the last fifteen years, from the suburbs of Naples to cities like Paris, London and Barcelona. «Although it’s the title track, this tune doesn’t encapsulate the stylistic essence of this project – Piccinno explains – It represents the opposite, proving to be the will to take a separate path, the desire of a breakout, nevertheless expressed with a sometimes heartfelt understatement.»

The real strength of this work lies in interplay, thanks to a relationship the band cemented through the years. While keeping the whole music picture close to a mainstream sound, the trio enjoys reinterpreting contemporary jazz gems such as Dave Holland’s ‘Four Winds’, with its restless crescendo.

After several piano solo albums, collaborations with Italian and international artists and after recording with large and small European ensembles, Piccinno marks now his debut on Auand Records.
